The address is 5500 Rose Cherry Place.  Drop off hours are Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24th from 10 am to 6 pm, Rinks Entrance A, Parking AThe Region of Peel, University of Toronto Mississauga Centre for Student Engagement are also proud to support this worthwhile initiative.

Computers are the “New Backpacks”

Over the last 2 years, Let’s Get Together (LGT) has been working hard to help low-income families and individuals across Ontario access more affordable renewed computers through their “Creating Tech Savvy Communities” initiative.  They saw computers as the “new backpacks” and believed students should have access to them at home so they could support their pursuit of higher education.  They started by helping 20 families every few months purchase their own affordable computers through a program offered by Renewed Computer Technology.  Over the last year, they increased their efforts and have now helped over 1000 individuals and families across Ontario. Their ultimate goal is for every family and/or individual across Canada to own a computer and have access to internet service by 2024.

The Demand

The demand for computers at home increased dramatically when Covid-19 hit and most public places that offered free computer use were forced to close.  This moment served as an awakening for the greater community as many people were unequipped to continue to pursue their education, employment opportunities, and/or access essential community resources because they didn’t have access to a working computer or internet access at home.

While the demand for computers continued to increase, the number of computer donations slowed down significantly due to the province’s quarantine measures, thus reducing inventories at computer recycling companies.

“We need to kickstart the flow of donation by encouraging residents, organizations and businesses to collect their used, unwanted, broken technology and donate them to us.  By doing this, they will help both their community and our environment.” says, Alison.  She continues, “We’re incredibly fortunate to have the Raptors 905 help us by offering to host our technology drive at this time. Safety remains a priority. All Covid-19 safety protocols will be in place.”

The Bigger Goal – Higher Education

The goal is to collect 100 repurposable laptops/computers/tablets that will be redistributed back to the Peel Region community at no cost.  They also aim to raise a total value of $1000 worth of other reusable equipment with a portion of the proceeds going to support “Let’s Get Talking”, a student-centred family mentorship program that supports and promotes higher education.  It was developed by five University of Toronto Mississauga students this past April when many students found themselves at home but still wanting to help their community. I wish that I had access to a resource like Let’s Get Talking when I was younger where I could talk to older students who I could relate to. Many of us are happy to fill that gap now,” says Sravani Manda, a 3rd year student at UTM.  This student-created program continues to grow and now includes over 30 Student Ambassadors from 6 universities/colleges and 3 high schools across Ontario.

LGT is also asking corporations, businesses, schools and organizations to let them know when they plan to recycle their business laptops so that they can add them to a 4 year donation schedule as part of their ongoing strategic efforts to achieve their goal of eliminating the digital divide across Canada by 2024.
